Academic Writing.

Academic writing is a serious and formal way of writing. It is prepared by academicians like students, teachers, and scholars for academic purposes. Academic writers are expected to be objective, which means they have to prepare it based on supporting evidence or data.

It cannot prepare based on personal feelings and creative reflection unless the assignment question demands it. Writing tasks assigned to students at the college, University, are generally referred to as academic writing. Examples of academic writing are:        

  1. Essay.

  2. Research paper.

  3. Literature review.

  4. Proposal.

  5. Book review.

  6. Lab report.

  7. Case study, etc.

Features of an academic writing

Features of academic writing can be explained in three words: formal, objective, and technical.

1. Formal

Academic writers are not expected to use informal and conversational usages in language.  Colloquial expressions and contracted forms should avoid from academic writing.

2. Objective

The writer is expected to be objective, which means academic writing should be impersonal in tone.  Personal views and opinions cannot be included in academic writing.

3. Technical

Academic writing is technical because it has an organised pattern and structure. It has to use technical terms, words, and expressions.
